Once we were securely anchored, and had tied a line to the shore, they gave us some fish they had caught. They would not take our money, although we had no use for the remaining Bolivars. All they would accept were some cigarettes that I borrowed from our friends.
We rested up the whole of that day, and left the following morning for Trinidad.
Although it was tempting to stay longer in Trinidad, my wife's uncle told us they had booked flights to visit us in St Maarten that December. On the one hand it gave us the incentive to get somewhere by a certain time, but on the other hand it put undue pressure on us. Our motto after that was if anyone wanted to visit us they could nominate the time or the place, not both! We would let them know where we were, or when we would be there.
After making the necessary preparations for the move north, we waited for an appropriate weather window and made the 80 mile passage to Grenada. It was uneventful, and we arrived the following morning at Prickly Bay, Grenada. This is a large naturally protected anchorage on the southern edge of Grenada. We went ashore and cleared Customs and Immigration, and returned to the boats. We decided to see some of St Georges, the capital of Grenada. We caught a cab into town, and the driver showed us around.
One of the most interesting things we saw was the Rum factory. It is a steam driven facility, and all the machinery was shipped across from Glasgow, Scotland in the late 19th Century. The components were assembled in Grenada, and the factory has been in business ever since. The facility was shut down when we were there for their annual maintenance, but we were still taken on a tour and shown how everything works. Overall it was an interesting and positive experience.
Our next destination was Carriacou, the next island north that was part of Grenada. It is not particularly far, and took no more than a day. We dropped anchor in the bay in Hillsborough, and enjoyed the pristine waters and landscape. Although there was a 5 star resort at the beach, it was built unobtrusively, and did not detract from the scenery. I decided to switch from my 75 lbs CQR to my new 45 lbs Delta anchor. Although I have no complaints about the CQR whatsoever, the Delta has proven to be an exceptional anchor.
